For black women, there seems to only be two options. Either you’re happily married with children and a family, #relationshipgoals or you’re a lonely, bitter, “baby mama” #babymamadrama. Many times, we as black women are seen as being a woman scorned, angry, and hurt by past relationships. And when they hear the term “baby mama” stereotypes quickly paint a picture of a miserable, lonely, black woman, who’s on a mission to make their child’s father’s life hell, simply out of spite. Now, I know the urban dictionary isn’t a legitimate resource for information. And memes aren’t scriptures in the social media bible, but the Internet perpetuates the bitter baby mama narrative quite often.
The stigma of being a single black mother haunted me. Assuming that people would see me as the typical single mom, lonely, and resentful was my biggest fear. I never wanted to be looked at as just someone’s “baby mama”. And when I found out I was pregnant, sadly the world’s new vision of me was my biggest worry; like all of my other accomplishments wouldn’t seem to matter, because now, I’m just a “baby mama”. I was so concerned about how the world would view me as a single mother, that I couldn’t be happy at that moment. But man, let me tell you now! Fast forward to this moment, I can confidently say, my marital status doesn’t define who I am as a mother, and I can give a sh*t if anyone thinks otherwise.
My name is Brittanie Seymone, and I am not a “baby mama”, but I am an educated black woman; I am a multi-passionate entrepreneur; I am a happy, single, mother.
Not a baby mama, but an educated black woman
I’m not a baby mama, but I am the first college graduate in my immediate family and only the second graduate in my extended family. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University, Long Beach in Communication Studies and Entrepreneurship. I worked hard, rewarded with honors, and played harder, enjoying every moment of college life. Graduating college was one of the first times I felt a sense of pride. I spent nearly half my life in school, for that very moment. Finally walking across that stage was such a rewarding opportunity.
Not a baby mama, but an entrepreneur
I am the owner of The Modern Bride Concierge, a Wedding Planning and Event Staffing Company in Southern California. The Modern Virtual Assistant, a Virtual Assistant Agency catering to luxury wedding professionals and creative businesses, and most recently a Lifestyle Blog — www.brittanieseymone.com.
Since birth, I pretty much knew that I had to own something of my own. Y’all will quickly learn that I make my own rules, am a little bossy (so they say), and am very particular. So, I really had no other choice but to be my own boss. Owning multiple businesses and being blessed with the chance to do what I love for a living, make an impact, and chase my dreams is another prideful accomplishment.
Not a baby mama, but I am genuinely happy
Now, this is my biggest accomplishment! I am genuinely happy. Probably happier than I have ever been, in any relationship, being able to be the best mother I know how to my daughter. I know it’s cheesy, but she really makes me a better person. I am having so much fun being her mom. She was exactly what I needed, at this moment. She makes me laugh daily, she keeps me on my toes 24/7, and she makes me want to be the best version of me. The feeling is truly indescribable, and she is a true blessing.
Ladies, there is so much more to us than our relationship status, and how many kids we have, or don’t have. And, don’t ever let the world’s stereotypes let you forget who you are. I’m not a baby mama, but I am blessed, I am happy, and I am a damn good Mommy!
Now that you all know a little about me, tell me something about you; as a black woman, as a mother, as a wife, as a student, as whoever! My blog, Modern Motherhood, is a way for us as millennial moms to come together, educate, motivate, laugh, and maybe even cry sometimes. So, thank you all for being here to follow along!
